Football Frazzled? Don't Be Upset

The first weekend of NFL football was marked by upsets. If you were shocked by the demise of top teams like the Rams, Bengals, Cowboys, 49ers, Titans, and Packers, then my advice is to simply take an antacid or headache pill and keep moving. The upcoming slate of contests will be no less unpredictable — I mean, no more predictable — well, you know: crazy.
The thing about extreme parity is we're so glad it's here — and it makes us NFL fans incredibly unsettled. When our team wins, we are nothing short of jubilant. But when some upstart team takes our guys out behind the woodshed? We tell ourselves: 'it's just one game.' Inside, however, we feel panic. That's life as an NFL fan (can you imagine the roller coaster ride the players and coaches are on?)
The biggest loser of the weekend was the Cowboys, who now have a drama at quarterback after Dak Prescott's injury. Meanwhile, the other three teams in their division all won, so dark clouds are hanging over Dallas right now.
The Vikings made a head coaching change but got their act together a lot sooner than I expected, and that spelled doom for the Packers. Green Bay seemed to really miss WR Davante Adams, who helped the Raiders Sunday (but they came up short, too).
As I expected, the Bills were way too much for the defending champion Rams, who seemed to need WR Robert Woods back — to help the Ram offense win time of possession. The Bills were on the field all day, wearing out the Ram defense. Meanwhile, Woods was struggling with the Titans.
Ok, take a deep breath! We should not assume every week will be this crazy.
Week Two kicks off with a red-hot division match: the Chargers and Chiefs, both touting lights-out offenses. That is my game of the week. But note bien: the game is on Thursday night (big win for Amazon Prime TV).
The second-hottest game will not be nationally televised (catch the replay if you can). That nasty Buccaneer defense will head to New Orleans for the first half of of their annual Southern Grudge Match with the Saints.
In a Monday night double header, the Titans have the unfortunate task of trying to rebound from a loss — versus the Bills. And the weekend capper features the Vikings visiting the Eagles — both looked unstoppable Sunday.
My picks for Week One got clobbered. I only scored 4.5 out of 16 (I can't believe the Colts and Texans played to a tie). Undaunted, I will join the Titans, Packers, Broncos, Bengals, etc. in looking for that mythical 'rebound'. But I have the Maalox ready, just in case.
Here are the Week Two matches — and my picks:
1. Chargers at Chiefs Chiefs TNF
2. Patriots at Steelers Steelers
3. Panthers at Giants Giants
4. Jets at Browns Browns
5. Colts at Jaguars Jaguars
6. Dolphins at Ravens Ravens
7. Bucs at Saints Bucs
8. Commanders at Lions Lions
9. Seahawks at 49ers 49ers
10. Falcons at Rams Rams
11. Cardinals at Raiders Raiders
12. Texans at Broncos Broncos
13. Bengals at Cowboys Bengals
14. Bears at Packers Packers SNF
15. Titans at Bills Bills MNF
16. Vikings at Eagles Eagles MNF
In case of emergency, break glass . . . of beer.
