Grease Comeback After 40 Years

Finally, something new to cheer about -- a Grease reunion!! Can it really be 40 years?!

The word is that a 'Grease' reunion is in the works. Now this really is something to cheer about! Olivia Newton-John starred with John Travolta in the 1978 film almost 4 decades ago. The British-Australian singer, songwriter and actress is a four time Grammy Award winner. The Grease soundtrack was one of the most successful albums ever and stayed at Number 1 for 12 non- consecutive weeks.

It yielded three top- five singles for Newton-John: "You're The One That I Want," "Hopelessly Devoted to You," and "Summer Nights.” John Travolta sang with her on “You’re the One That I Want” and “Summer Nights.” He was already a big celebrity from his “Welcome Back Kotter” and “Saturday Night Fever” days. Ya know, you listen to these tunes decades later and they hold up; bouncy, upbeat with a flavor of innocence.

The theme of the movie was young summer love. A wholesome exchange student Sandy (Newton-John) and tough-talking Danny (John Travolta), resplendent in tight leather, get involved. They are opposites but click like nobody’s business.

It seemed innocent although, in all fairness, the original movie did touch on decadence, with characters smoking and drinking at the school dance. There were some obscene words and gestures. And Sandy’s virginity was made fun of by the so-called Pink Ladies, a garish high school crowd. In spite of this, there was a freshness and lightness about Grease that lacks in many films today.

With the potential for the Grease comeback in 2018, I would hope the basic themes of unrequited romance, love, dance and music stay in the forefront. Whether some cast members have packed on a few pounds or gained a few wrinkles is really irrelevant. We need more ‘milk and cookies’ in our lives.

That’s probably why the 2017 winner of 6 Academy Awards La La Land is so popular. It has many of the same elements as the musical Grease. So if some think Grease is corny, well, just bring on the tub of buttered popcorn and I’ll be first on line to see the new and improved Grease-Circa 2018 as soon as it previews…
