Parton, Tomlin, and Fonda May Star in a 9 to 5 Film Reboot

The sequel to the classic film was in the works to be Executive Produced by Jane Fonda. It was put on hold in 2019 but might be in the works again.

How can you not love a movie with Dolly Parton in it? The legendary singer/songwriter starred in 9 to 5 (1980) with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Dolly penned the theme song, appropriately titled '9 to 5.' Both the movie and tune were megahits.

I cannot believe the premier was 42 years ago! IMDb described the plot: "Three female employees of a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot find a way to turn the tables on him." Dabney Coleman portrays the clueless boss.

Dolly won 2 Grammys in 1981 for Best Song/Vocal Performance plus the People's Choice Award for her catchy tune. Flash forward to 2021, and Dolly's 9 to 5 theme was inducted into the Online Film & Television Association (OFTA) Film Hall of Fame Songs.

I love the song. It's the type of riff that goes around and around in your head, like her duet with Kenny Islands Rogers in Islands in the Stream--just what you'd expect from the author of the powerful Jolene and I Will Always Love You. Dolly Parton is a force of nature. Between her philanthropy and humility, she is in a class by herself. I think the power of the reboot would hinge on the extreme popularity of Ms. Parton, so it makes sense for Executive Producer Jane Fonda to promote a sequel.

Jane Fonda and comedian Lily Tomlin teamed up for seven seasons of Grace and Frankie. The Netflix show premiered in 2015. After seven seasons it was the streaming service's longest-running comedy series. The show is about two mature women who end up sharing a place after they receive the unwelcome news that their two law partner husbands fell in love.

Fonda plays a cosmetics mogul and Tomlin, loved so much for Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in, is an art teacher. The unlikely housemates go through ups and downs -- health scares, business ventures, dating trials, and even promote sex toys. The show had 13 Primetime Emmy Awards -- 4 for Tomlin and one for Fonda as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category.

Why was Grace and Frankie cancelled? One theory is that the show was too close in content to Amazon's Transparent, about a 70s-something transgender woman coming out of the closet. But there are more likely reasons, including the fact that Fonda and Tomlin got the same salaries as costars Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston.

I would like to see the sequel done even though I typically don't care for reboots. workplace discrimination is still alive and well.  Hollywood should offer work to mature actors. Fonda is now 84, Tomlin, 82. and Parton, 76. They're talented and beautiful. But Hollywood reflects society: ageism exists in all areas of employment.

Fonda is a brilliant marketer. Her idea to cast Dolly Parton in the last episode of Grace and Frankie created suspense for a possible remake of 9 to 5. The movie was being talked about, then was put on the back burner, but is still in talks.
