Right-Wing Attacks on Liz Cheney Must Stop

GOP conference chairwoman Liz Cheney may lose her position in party leadership to accommodate the wishes of the man who recently lost the presidential election by over seven million votes.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has decided to go along with the Trump-led effort to remove Liz Cheney as conference chairwoman by endorsing Trump's lackey Elise Stefanik to take her place. Through this internal feud in the GOP, we can clearly see that there are deep divisions between the Trump-wing and the more traditional conservative wing of the GOP.

Cheney still faces criticism for her vote to impeach Trump after the events of January 6th, despite McCarthy making it clear to his caucus that they should vote their conscience and not feel compelled to defend Trump. Cheney is also being criticized for her refusal to go along with his narrative that both major parties conspired to steal the 2020 election from him.

Liz Cheney is not backing down from the repeated attacks from both Trump and his congressional allies.

Cheney tweeted: “The 2020 presidential election was not stolen. Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system.”

She also recently wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post in which she warned that the GOP is at a crossroad and that they cannot win by continuing to idolize the former president. Cheney wrote, “The Republican Party is at a turning point, and Republicans must decide whether we are going to choose truth and fidelity to the Constitution.”

Cheney took a direct aim at McCarthy for changing his stance on her leadership role in the party. She warned him that the GOP cannot succeed if it continues down its current path of allowing Trump to run the show even after his defeat.

If Cheney is removed from her House leadership role and replaced by Stefanik, the GOP will be signaling that it does not care about having true conservatives lead the party as long as they go along with Trump’s narratives.

The American Conservative Union has given Cheney a 78 percent positive rating based on her voting history. This is compared to a 44 percent score for Stefanik.

Representative Adam Kinzinger compared the current state of the GOP to the Titanic and attacked McCarthy for flip-flopping on his support for Cheney. He has made it clear that the vote to remove Cheney will be putting every House GOP member on the record as to whether they have sold out to Trump. With the removal of Cheney, it will also be clear that the GOP only belongs to Trump with no room for any dissent.
