The Primaries are Producing Mixed Results for Trump

An overview of the midterm primaries so far.

With the midterm primary season underway, former President Trump has inserted himself into the GOP primaries. Many Republican candidates have considered Trump’s endorsement to be the ultimate catalyst to their prospects for victory. Trump has been consistently claiming to be the true leader of the Republican Party, even though the party lost the House, the Senate, and the White House during his presidency.

There is growing evidence that Trump’s influence in the GOP is waning as voters look for forward-thinking candidates who can deliver victories rather than engage in political theater and vendettas. He has endorsed many candidates in primaries various offices, including state governors, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and even state Secretaries of State.

In Pennsylvania, Trump’s endorsed candidate for Senate, Dr. Mehmet Oz, is currently less than a thousand votes ahead of former Wall Street hedge fund manager Dave McCormick with 100 percent of the vote counted. The race is headed to an automatic recount. The winner will go on to face Democrat John Fetterman, Lt. Governor of Pennsylvania, in the Senate race in November.

In North Carolina, the Trump-endorsed freshman Congressman Madison Cawthorn lost the Republican primary for U.S. House to state GOP Senator Chuck Edwards. It is considered a significant loss for Trump as Cawthorn has been one of his most outspoken supporters in the GOP.

In Ohio, there was a mixed result for Trump. In the GOP gubernatorial primary, incumbent Republican Governor Mike DeWine cruised to victory over Trump-endorsed former congressman Jim Renacci. In the Senate race, political outsider J.D. Vance received Trump’s endorsement and ended up surging to defeat former Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel. Vance will face Democrat congressman Tim Ryan in this key U.S.  Senate race that will be important in the pursuit of the majority in the balance of power.

In Georgia, Herschel Walker, endorsed by Trump, easily won the GOP Senate primary. On the other hand, Trump’s Governor and Secretary of State endorsees lost by huge margins. Incumbent Republican Governor Brian Kemp easily defeated former Senator David Perdue in the GOP primary. Likewise, the incumbent Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger trounced his Trump-endorsed challenger Jody Hice. Trump’s endorsements were entirely based on his personal vendettas. Georgia Republican voters recognized this and rejected Trump’s style of politics.

There are still many more important primaries in the coming weeks and months, but it is becoming more clear that Trump’s waning influence may ultimately play a role in his decision to make a 2024 run for president. There is a growing faction in the GOP that would prefer a stronger candidate than Trump, such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis or former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. Other potential candidates, including Mike Pence and Chris Christie, are also likely to make strong runs for the presidential nomination. All of these factors weigh against Trump making another run for the White House.
