The Reason To Be Thankful

As Americans, we still do have a reason to be thankful. We are free to question governmental behavior, and that is a blessing.

It came to me today that as American citizens we have every reason to be thankful.  What is going on in Washington right now is the product of our democratic approach in politics.

Yes, there are Americans all over this country who still feel support for our President, and by nature of the system under which we live, it is their right to take the position they have chosen.  That is what sets us apart, and is my reason for believing that I should still be thankful to be an American Citizen.

Having lived as long as this, I have been witness to things that have been done by some of those who are part of our government.  However, we have been free to speak out and call for the end of these mistakes, and were my father alive today, I know that he would agree with me.

My Dad taught American History in the New York City Schools, and devoted his life to sharing his vision with the students who were fortunate enough to be citizens.  In addition, when I was fortunate enough to teach myself, my goal was to encourage my students to pursue the truth as it related to what was happening in the political arena.

Another memory that gives me a sense of thankfulness today is that he also chose to teach in the night schools where he helped aspiring citizens who were refugees of Hitler's madness, and I have to believe that were he here today, he would be joyful to see our system of government in action.

On Thanksgiving, it seems appropriate that we say thank you to God for being fortunate enough to be part of a system of government that gives us the opportunity to voice our political preferences.

May God continue to bless the American people with the right to question the behavior of those in government.

Yes, we are still privy to the mistakes being made in government, but nonetheless, we remain free to question why.

My granddaughter has chosen teaching as her life's work, and I am thankful that her classroom is a place where young people can learn more about their government.  It is ignorance that is responsible for some of what can happen in this country.
