NFL Finale Will Reveal Who Cares

The change in a calendar year is apparently not a guarantee of anything. Reflecting the concerns America had last year — in politics, health, economics, and more — the nation’s favorite spectator sport enters 2023 with a large cloud hanging over it. A spate of events, some never before seen, have us scrambling for answers. But they have not silenced those who take up the old cry: ‘The show must go on’!
This weekend, the last remaining NFL regular season mysteries will be solved, and the stage will be set for a splashy playoff drama. One exception: the cancellation of the Bengals-Bills showdown that was interrupted Monday night. It has been declared a 'no contest' (not a tie) by the NFL, and that means that the AFC championship game could be played on a neutral site. It is also possible that the site for a playoff game could be decided by a coin toss. As of this writing, all details have not been decided.
Are there teams who care about this weekend's matches? Yes, about half of the teams care deeply. The Chiefs (13-3) and Bills (12-3) have locked down division championships, but they still care because they want to get as many home playoff games as possible. The Bengals (11-4) were unlikely to get the #1 seed, but are now out of the running altogether, although they have clinched the AFC North title. This muddies the waters as far as the Bengals' motivation to win on Sunday.
The NFC will crown a #1 seed in the more traditional fashion. The Cowboys (12-4) will go all out, and the Eagles (13-3) badly need to win Sunday afternoon to keep from falling to the #5 seed. Their match against the Giants (who have a Wild Card) would be my Game of the Week, but I question how much the Giants care.
In a massive showdown Saturday night, the Jaguars will try to complete their takeover of the AFC South with a win against the slumping Titans.
And there are several more teams who care, including the Patriots, Lions, Packers, and Seahawks, who will try to claw their way into the playoff winner's circle with wins on Sunday afternoon.
Among the teams (and fans) who do not care are the Raiders, Bears, Colts, Browns, Commanders, and Broncos — they would just as soon lose their games this weekend because the NFL draft is now their prime motivation.
Providing plenty of thrills will be the Dolphins-Jets rematch and the Lions-Packers shootout Sunday night, which will decide the remaining Wild Cards. (I will be glued to my TV Sunday.)
Last week, my picks went 12-3. Here are all the Week 18 matches — and my selections:
1. Chiefs at Raiders Chiefs SAT
2. Titans at Jaguars Jaguars SAT
3. Bucs at Falcons Falcons
4. Patriots at Bills Bills
5. Vikings at Bears Vikings
6. Ravens at Bengals Bengals
7. Texans at Colts Colts
8. Jets at Dolphins Jets
9. Panthers at Saints Saints
10. Giants at Eagles Eagles
11. Browns at Steelers Steelers
12. Cowboys at Commanders Cowboys
13. Chargers at Broncos Broncos
14. Rams at Seahawks Seahawks
15. Cardinals at 49ers 49ers
16. Lions at Packers Packers SNF
And, as the beer chills on ice, some fans still care about the teams that will not be playing next weekend. A toast to them, too.
