Patriots' Dynasty In The Sunset

Bert Bell, NFL commissioner from 1946 until his death in 1959, introduced competitive "parity" into the NFL, helping make it the most preeminent and financially-successful sports league in the world. But it took the better part of 50 to 60 more years to fully achieve Bell's dream. In 2020, as the playoffs begin, we are witnessing the end of the last pro football dynasty.

Since 2000, there has only been one dynasty in the NFL: the New England Patriots. When it ends, I believe there will be no more dynasties in pro football, because the Patriots are an anomaly, a hold-over — the NFL has already achieved Commissioner Bell's stated goal: parity.

Bill Belichick became head coach of the Patriots in 2000 (his only losing season with the Patriots). Tom Brady was selected in the 2000 draft, and started at QB in 2001. The Patriots won the AFC East division 17 out of 20 years and went to the Super Bowl nine times, winning six.

But in 2020, the reigning AFC East and Super Bowl champions are doing something unusual: they are playing on wild card weekend, having been denied a first-round bye. NFL watchers have been taking about the "end of the dynasty" for many years, but this time, I think we're there.

To be blunt, I do not expect to see Belichick and Brady in the Super Bowl this February. But which 2020 playoff game will end it for them?

I think the team winning the "Time of Possession" (TOP) will prevail Saturday night, and regardless of the weather and the home field, I am going with the Titans to swing the axe. They have the running game (behind Derrick Henry) and the passing game (behind Ryan Tannehill) to win the TOP. With Kevin Byard, Harold Landry and Adoree Jackson (knee injury) in the lineup, that defense is also quite competent, although the Patriot D is better.

The Texans are my pick to handle those feisty runners-up in the AFC East, the Bills. The Texans' D has been giving up a lot of real estate, but I particularly like that indoor scoring squad: QB Deshaun Watson and his top WR targets: Deandre Hopkins, Kenny Stills and Will Fuller.

The Saints have both enough offense and defense needed to send the Vikings home Sunday — after Minnesota posted a fine record but was unable to take the NFC North from the Packers. QB Kirk Cousins and WR Stephon Diggs would need another "Minnesota Miracle" to unseat Drew Brees, RB Alvin Kamara and WR Michael Thomas.

And I think the Eagles will prevail versus the Seahawks, even though Seattle won their November 24 contest. The Hawks have been stumbling lately, and the Eagles have something to prove.

If the Patriots survive, I expect elimination next weekend. It has been a storied journey by a duo (and let's not forget all those other stars, especially on defense) that I think deserves lot of accolades. No tricks could produce 20 years of excellence. And at some point, the Bills, Jets and/or Dolphins will finally play at home in January. Meanwhile, remember that all these playoff teams are capable of winning — on any given Sunday — or even on a Saturday.

Get ready with your beer, snacks and a comfortable seat. It's about that time!
