Summer Olympics Musings, Part One

The 2020 Summer Olympics are certainly interesting.

I've long been fascinated by the Olympic Games, summer and winter. My first research paper I wrote for school, in eighth grade, was about the Olympics. I love to watch diving, swimming, and gymnastics in the summer; and ski jumps and snowboarding in the winter. Now add to this skateboarding!

The media has been full of stories about whether or not the games should have been held this year, the various problems due to COVID and social distancing, controversies surrounding swim caps and uncomfortable uniforms, and more. I just want to brush that all aside, and enjoy the athletics.

I tuned in to watch the Opening ceremonies, with the pomp of each nation's flag bearers and the special clothing. And the gorgeous Tongan  flag bearer.

Already a few scenes and moments stand out: this year there was a moment of silence for the Israeli athletes and coaches assassinated during the 1972 Munich summer games (it was part of a larger memorial to those who died of COVID and more). Also somber has been seeing athletes wearing masks due to concerns over COVID.

Regarding the fact that some athletes have been turned away because they won't get a COVID vaccination: why would you toss your chance at Olympic history, because you won't vax?

This year I have a vague link to an actual Olympian: a junior high classmate of mine has a son who is playing for the Israeli Baseball team! Go Rob Paller!

This year there are five new sports to watch, including karate, skateboarding and surfing. I'm pleased that karate is finally included, because I studied karate for many years and wondered why judo and taekwondo have already been included. It's about time surfing was part of the games, in my honest opinion. But, apparently skateboarding is a controversial move. Some people think it belongs in the X sports only.

I also wish IOC would bring back tug-of-war, which was jettisoned after the 1920 games.

Much about the modern Olympics has changed and evolved over time: rules, controversies, media coverage, what type of sportsman-like behavior has been considered acceptable or not, rivalries, and more. Each year, sadly, it seems like the Olympics carries heavier baggage (drug use decisions especially). It's difficult to cut through all the hoopla, in order to get to the joy of what had been a celebration of non-professional sports. Pro basketball players are now on the national teams, for one.

But take at least a few minutes to watch one or two events that you find interesting. Watch men and women racing in a swimming pool, or fencing, or throwing a discus or javelin. Marvel at the physical feats of amazing athletes, who spend so much time training for their sports. It's amazing, and humbling.
