Think Fast

What in the world is wrong with the Bucs and Packers? There is whispering around the NFL that perhaps Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers are too old and slow. This talk gains fuel as several teams turn to younger, faster quarterbacks.
Last weekend, the pared-down Panthers (2-5) called upon PJ Walker, a 2017 undrafted free agent, to quarterback a stunning victory over the 2021 Super Bowl champion Bucs. Amazingly, the Bucs (3-4) are still leading the NFC South division. But after that humiliating loss, Tampa needs to regroup quickly to get ready for a tough Thursday night match — there is nothing slow about Lamar Jackson, whose Ravens (4-3) lead the AFC North.
The Packers are 3-4 after three straight losses and trail the Vikings (5-1) in the NFC North. Green Bay struggled against QB Taylor Heinicke and the Commanders (3-4) last weekend, so can you imagine the world of trouble they face Sunday night versus Josh Allen and the Bills (5-1)?
The Titans are in good shape atop the AFC South at 4-2, but what do they do when QB Ryan Tannehill’s injury has him out for several weeks? Think fast. Their highly-touted 2022 draft pick, Malik Willis, brings the kind of speed to the QB position that could make their offense more complicated. And the Colts, who are in second place (3-3-1), appear to be matching speed with speed. After QB Matt Ryan’s shoulder injury, they quickly decided to bench him for the year, turning the season over to Sam Ehlinger, their young 2021 draftee.
The Raiders (2-4) need a quick turnaround if they are to get back in the AFC playoff race. The only problem is they have to play the Saints (2-5) in New Orleans. The Raiders have had, among other problems, trouble protecting QB Derrick Carr, and the Saints' defense has been good at bringing pressure.
So, going into Week Eight, there are a number of big question marks. What else is new? Except for a handful of standout teams, the league in 2022 is one huge tossup. Last week, fittingly, my picks again went 7-7.
Here are all of the Week Eight matches — and my picks:
1. Ravens at Bucs Ravens TNF
2. Broncos at Jaguars Jaguars
3. Panthers at Falcons Falcons
4. Bears at Cowboys Cowboys
5. Dolphins at Lions Dolphins
6. Cardinals at Vikings Vikings
7. Raiders at Saints Saints
8. Patriots at Jets Jets
9. Steelers at Eagles Eagles
10. Titans at Texans Titans
11. Commanders at Colts Colts
12. 49ers at Rams Rams
13. Giants at Seahawks Seahawks
14. Packers at Bills Bills SNF
15. Bengals at Browns Bengals MNF
The Chiefs and Chargers have byes this week.
Nearing the halfway mark, several teams have major personnel issues and injuries, which they need to get fixed — and fast.
Ehlinger will get the start in Week 8 against Washington and 'the rest of the season'
