We Need to Stop Gendering Fashion

Women are continuously persecuted for dressing too masculine, men are ostracized for dressing too feminine, and now our president is requiring his female staff to "dress like women."

I love fashion because it's such a strong form of expression. It's like the ultimate first impression. Sure, that first impression may be completely wrong. But isn't that true of...any first impression?

Well, as someone who admits to her awkwardness in social gatherings, I pride myself on the statement my choice in clothing makes. Because fashion is one of those things that, even if you hate the concept, you still have to buy into in one way or another. Even if you decided to wear only grey sweatsuits for the rest of your life because you are against the concept, you're participating and expressing yourself through your clothing. I just love that catch-22.

So if fashion is all about self-expression and initiating that first impression, who are we to dictate what anyone does or does not wear? If a man wants to wear skirts, or a woman wants to rock a crew-cut and pant-suit, how can we say no?

It's an unfortunate fact in this day and age that, in order to be taken seriously, or land that dream job, certain expectations must be met when it comes to clothing. That's a topic for another time.

For now, it's important to understand that dressing more feminine or more masculine shouldn't have any effect on what we perceive as correct. Gender norms in clothing were randomly assigned at some point, and it's time to change such an outdated vision. Historically speaking, pink was a color for boys - it's closer to red, which symbolizes power. Blue, a more mellow color, was for girls. At some point, that changed, so how can we say with such certainty what is and isn't feminine or masculine?

I think the social media backlash following Donald Trumps proposed dress code says it all. Women can be doctors, scientists, soldiers, or astronauts. So what does it really mean when you say "dress like a woman"?
