Why is Everyone Obsessed with Glossier?

I just don't get it.
Glossier is probably one of the top beauty brands out there right now.
Their motto is "Skin first. Makeup second."
That sounds right up my alley. I'm absolutely obsessed with skincare, but don't really bother with makeup, aside from doing my brows and the ocassional swipe of highlighter and lipstick. Afterall, caked on makeup ("cakeup," if you will) just leads to bad skin. So a makeup brand that boasts amazing skincare? Sign me up!
The brand was started by beauty maven, Emily Weiss. With a background at Vogue and W magazines, she started her own beauty blog, Into the Gloss, in 2010. Four years later, she established her beauty brand, in an effort to create the the products she felt were missing in the industry.
Since the 2014 launch, Glossier has released everything from lip balms and face masks, to foundation, highlighters and, most recently, sunscreen.
Their packaging is top notch. Your items come in an adorable pink bubble wrap travel bag and a branded cardboard box that is pink on the inside. You even get a complimentary set of stickers to help spread their advertising!

I'm a sucker for beautiful packaging, so I've been a customer since the beginning. I'll hand it to them, the lip balm (aptly named "balm dot com") is amazing. I've tried all the flavors -- coconut, cherry, mint, and rose. Aside from the rose flavor (way too sweet), they all smell amazing and do a great job at moisturizing.
All the other products, however, feel majorly sub-par.
The foundation is greasy and messy and doesn't have much staying power. The moisturizer and spray smell really weird. The face wash feels like it does nothing. "Boy Brow" (their eyebrow pomade) is all right . . . but it leaves my brow looking splotchy unless I stand there for ten minutes fine tuning (for the record, the idea behind Boy Brow is that it is quick and effortless).
You may notice that I've tried quite a few of Glossier's products. So why do I keep coming back after being repeatedly disappointed? I think it's that packaging. So beautiful and simple and packed with care. It's a great bathroom accessory, I suppose.
And on the other hand, the brand gets nothing but top reviews. The face wash is on almost every editor's "best-of" list. Over and over again, I hear great things. So, over and over again, I go back and try the newest release. It's a sisyphean habit of mine . . .
Looks like Glossier has gotten their advertising down. I just wish the inside was as good as the outside. And I'd like to ask those other editors -- am I missing something?
