"Women Aren't Funny": Debunking the Myth

We've all seen those dudebros online who seem convinced that women can't be funny. Clearly, they're wrong, but please allow me to rant about why that idea is ridiculous.

Biologically, all humans are pretty similar, regardless of their sex or gender. There is no reason that men and women would have different levels of ability regarding humor. Men and women are indeed socialized differently in our sexist society, and this affects the brain in some ways. But despite that, all of our brains remain quite similar. There is no such thing as a typical male or female brain. If there's no significant difference between male or female brains, then it stands to reason that there are no inherent differences in humor.

Another thing to remember is that humor is highly subjective. There's physical humor, dark humor, dad jokes, puns, political humor, satire, memes, and so much more. What I find funny might be completely different from the humor you enjoy. Most likely, those men who don't find women funny simply don't share the same type of humor with the particular woman whose jokes they've heard. Those guys then came to the false conclusion that because they didn't find that one woman comedian funny, therefore, all women must not be funny. I sincerely hope none of the guys who think that way end up becoming scientists because that flies in the face of scientific thinking. Making an assumption about an entire group of people based on a single experience with one member of that group is such short-sighted thinking.

Finally, female comics exist. I'm not going to waste my time typing out a list here, but google it and you'll find a whole bunch. Logically, if women aren't funny, then there is a whole lot of them who've got tons of people fooled. How do they do it? It must be witchcraft!

Seriously, though, it amazes me that there are people who are so self-centered that they think what they find funny is the universal standard of humor. Jokes that aren't racist or sexist or homophobic are not less funny. It's humor which doesn't attack half the people who hear it.

At this point you might be wondering, why do I care? Truthfully, I know this shouldn't matter that much to me. I know women are funny, so I shouldn't let some sexist jerks on the internet get to me. Still, it bothers me, maybe because I know that many of the people who think that way are the same guys who like to make jokes putting people down. And on a more philosophical note, humor is part of what makes us human, so in saying that women can't be humorous, it feels a bit like they're not considering women to be fully realized human beings, and that's not cool.
