Worth the Splurge . . . ?

The top beauty products often come with hefty price tags. Are they worth it?

The short answer? I don't know.

It's my birthday month and I just got my paycheck last week. That sentence is not good news for my wallet.

I have an obsession with skincare products.  Ever since I was little, watching my mom get ready in the morning, I was enthralled by the routine of self-care. Washing your face with a special cleanser, moisturizing with a luxurious cream, spritzing some beautifully floral perfume . . .

So when I want to treat myself, I spend money on beauty products rather than shoes or handbags (ok fine, sometimes I also spend money on shoes and handbags). The one product I've been dreaming of for years is La Mer's Crème de la Mer -- a legendary cream developed by an aerospace scientist

You read that right. La Mer began when Dr. Max Huber suffered burns following an experiment. Inspired by the sea, Huber mixed nutrient-rich sea kelp with other ingredients, creating what the brand calls their "Miracle Broth." 12 years and 6,000 experiments later, Crème de la Mer was born.

One two-ounce jar of the stuff will cost you $310.00. But don't worry, they offer complimentary shipping!

You must think I'm crazy for daydreaming of something like spending over $300 on a tiny container of cream to rub on my face.

There's just something about indulging in something luxurious and feeling like I'm treating myself with extra care from time to time. Something as tiny as a dollop of moisturizer becomes so special. Not to mention, the stuff really does make a huge difference. I had the pleasure of trying a tiny sample once -- I used it on my sunburned cheeks and, I kid you not, I instantly felt soothed and the burn was gone by the next morning. I could only imagine what my face would look and feel like if I could use the product on a daily basis.

Let's go back to the fact that April is my birthday month -- Ok, so I couldn't bear to spend that kind of money, not yet at least. I did, however, purchase La Mer's Micellar Water - a gentle cleanser that requires no washing off, and is still made with that same "Miracle Broth." It was $50.00 and I regret nothing about spending that kind of money on 100ml of liquid. As soon as you apply it, your skin lightly tingles and feels instantly refreshed.

Is it really that much better than a cheaper version? Not entirely sure, I hear great things about Bioderma's Micellar Water, which costs $10.00. But sometimes you need to treat yourself and you can't ever feel bad about that.
